What’s What in Savannah

Alpha Phi Alpha: A black fraternity at Savannah State College. APA’s graduate chapter hosts the annual debutante ball for Savannah’s black community, which Berendt attends.

Bonaventure Cemetery: Savannah’s largest cemetery and resting place of generations of Savannahians including the famous poet Conrad Aiken and the famous songwriter Johnny Mercer. Danny Hansford is buried there, too. Several scenes in the book occur in this cemetery, and the cover image—of a gravesite statue known as “Bird Girl”—was taken in Bonaventure.

Chatham County Courthouse: Savannah’s courthouse, where Jim Williams’s first 3 murder trials take place.

Chatham County Jail: Savannah’s jail, where Jim Williams is held without bail between his second and third murder trials.

Emma’s: A piano bar owned and operated by Emma Kelly, a piano player and singer beloved throughout Savannah. Joe Odom owned a share of the bar for a while before leaving to open his own establishment.

Hamilton-Turner House: An ornate Second Empire château, the only one of its kind in Savannah. Joe Odom moves here and offers tours for three dollars, against his neighbors’ wishes.

Historic Savannah: Savannah’s housing preservation and restoration organization, responsible for much of downtown Savannah’s revitalization. Jim Williams and Lee Adler were both core members, until Lee Adler was voted off.

Married Woman’s Card Club: An exclusive Savannah women’s club that meets every month for cocktails, dinner, and card games. The club always has exactly 16 members.

Mercer House: Jim Williams’s Italianate mansion.

Montgomery Street: The seedy street in Savannah, where hustlers and prostitutes hang out.

Oglethorpe Club: Savannah’s oldest and most exclusive gentleman’s club; all of Savannah’s most respected men belong—except for Lee Adler, whose rejection from the club might have something to do with his Jewish heritage.

The Pickup: The nightclub where Berendt sees Lady Chablis perform her drag show.

Sweet Georgia Brown’s: Joe Odom’s 1890s-themed bar. Odom opens the bar with Mandy, his then-fiancée. He doesn’t pay the rent and is forced to close the bar.
